PLA plastic cards (or corn cards) are manufactured from Poly Lactic Acid derived from corn.  Corn cards look and feel exactly the same as their petroleum based PVC counterparts and promise the same durability.  Whereas oil based PVC is derived from a natural resource which requires millions of years to regenerate, the strain of plant which produces corn PLA plastic is ready for harvesting after only 100 days.  In manufacture, corn PLA cards require 35% less energy and produce 25% less green house gas.  Furthermore, corn PLA cards will not produce toxins when incinerated and are biodegradable through industrial composting.

PETG is another environmentally friendlier plastic card material which exhibits the same properties as PVC. However, PETG cards can be recycled without creating harmful gases or polluting the environment.  ID Data has recently delivered nearly 2 million PETG cards for a large European retailer as part of its ongoing strategy to raise awareness of environmentally friendly plastics.
