Markets : Gift Cards
Gift cards are the electronic alternative to paper gift vouchers. However, gift cards are so much more than just a plastic extension of the gift voucher. Research recently commissioned by Giftex predicts that by 2007 the use of Gift Cards in the UK will have multiplied ten fold, accounting for £2.1 billion in spend whilst vouchers will account for £1.6 billion. Sheer accessibility, ease of use, increased security and flexibility are just some of the benefits for both the retailer and consumer.
Forward thinking retailers will already be aware of the potential of these cards for consumer marketing, improved sales promotions and improved data capture/tracking. Retailers who are strategically aligned will be able to develop a cross-marketing solution whereby the gift card can be used in several shops that are not related by brand or parent company.
With the European market set to follow the US market where 80% of retailers have a gift card scheme, the early adopters in the European market are already realising the competitive advantages in a fiercely competitive marketplace.
