Gift cards are the electronic alternative to paper gift vouchers.  However, gift cards are so much more than just a plastic extension of the gift voucher.  

Forward thinking retailers will already be aware of the potential of these cards for consumer marketing, improved sales promotions and improved data capture/tracking.  Retailers who are strategically aligned will be able to develop a cross-marketing solution whereby the gift card can be used in several shops that are not related by brand or parent company.
