Markets : Central Government
The convergence towards an online world has created new types of risks for governments who now need a secure tool to identify employees and citizens both in electronic and physical environments, in order to prevent fraud, terrorism, and other criminal activity. Smart card technology has emerged as an ideal solution to meet these complex needs, by offering superior technology, quality and performance/price ratio over any other identity tool available today. ID Data has spoken with numerous government offices in the past to help them develop secure programmes which use both smart card and RFID technology.
More recently, ID Data has been talking with the UK Government on the National Identity Card and the Biometric Passport Projects. Clearly the ability to verify the identity of individuals quickly and accurately is important, especially with the growing concerns on public safety, immigration control, payment fraud and the ever-changing threat of terrorism. It is proposed that both projects will be phased in from 2008, and made compulsory two years later. Should a decision be reached in favour of the introduction of identity cards for the UK population, ID Data is hopeful that it will be chosen to work with the UK Government on the project.
On a wider level, smart card technology could extend the scope of the National Identity Card Project into many other areas. Smart card technology also means that each card can be used as a driving licence, a digital tachograph, a passport etc. ID Data has the technology and experience to work alongside the government sector and can offer an end-to-end solution both in the UK and overseas.
